New Civil Engineer recently reported the estimated shortfall in experienced civil and structural engineering candidates to be around 20,000. The majority of these needs continue to be at the intermediate level, with clients reporting large shortfalls in chartered/incorporated staff, or those approaching professional status.

The Industry has seen a number of large and innovative civil engineering projects, including the 2012 Olympic Games Site (£2.37bn), Crossrail (£16bn), and the feasibility proposal of a hydroelectric dam in the river Severn. East Anglia has also seen an upsurge in infrastructure development. Significant local projects include the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway (£50m+) intelligent transport system using old train track along the A14 corridor and the Edith Cavell Hospital, Peterborough - £335m new hospital and completion of the Cambridge Grand Arcade.
