Civil & Structural Engineering

Market overview:
New Civil Engineer recently reported the estimated shortfall in experienced civil and structural engineering candidates to be around 20,000. The majority of these needs continue to be at the intermediate level, with clients reporting large shortfalls in chartered/incorporated staff, or those approaching professional status.

The Industry has seen a number of large and innovative civil engineering projects, including the 2012 Olympic Games Site (£2.37bn), Crossrail (£16bn), and the feasibility proposal of a hydroelectric dam in the river Severn. East Anglia has also seen an upsurge in infrastructure development. Significant local projects include the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway (£50m+) intelligent transport system using old train track along the A14 corridor and the Edith Cavell Hospital, Peterborough - £335m new hospital and completion of the Cambridge Grand Arcade.

As a Client looking to recruit Civil & Structural Engineering staff in East Anglia, London or the South our experience suggests that an increased salary alone is not enough to attract recently Chartered Engineers considering a career move. Although average salaries have increased in recent years, motivation for a career move is just as likely to come from the type of project on offer. The career promotion prospects, flexible working conditions and overall benefits package that you can offer to potential employees will also play a major factor in your success at recruiting and retaining staff. In the current market good quality candidates will still end up with a number of interviews and potential offers to consider. Having the flexibility to consider strong candidates that could bring something to your organisation rather than searching for an exact match to your job specifications will bring your company the best results.

The industry skills shortage has also led to a greater number or multi-skilled candidates in the market, with engineers and technicians crossing over between civil and structural projects. The skills shortage, and recent media focus on the industry from high profile projects, especially the 2012 Olympic Games, has also led to an increase of graduate candidates looking to enter the industry, with companies unable to provide sufficient graduate positions. Many smaller consultancies are now seeing the extra benefit of training undergraduates/graduates in house, and seeking to retain staff loyalty through their CPD into senior roles.
